Mosque not a place to express anger: Jamil Khir

SEPANG, May 6 (Bernama) -- A mosque is no place for a politically motivated gathering, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said today.

Muslims above all people should know the rules and ethics that must be observed in a mosque, he added when asked to comment on a report that a huge crowd would gather at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur today to express anger on several issues.

"Whatever the gathering, it should not smack of politics if it is to be in a mosque. Whatever the gathering is called, it is political if the intention is that," he told reporters here.

According to the report, the gathering would urge Jawi, the Federal Territory Islamic Department, to take immediate action against businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah.

The report did not say why the action should be taken, but Shazryl had taken a "sumpah laknat" (oath that can turn into a curse) in a mosque in Sentul, swearing that the man featured in a sex video was opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Jamil Khir said that an investigation must precede any action against anyone accused of any wrong doing, and this was the job of the police and not Jawi.

In any case, the sanctity of the mosque must be observed, he said, adding that the house of worship should not be used for politics or to defend any individual.
